Sometimes my friends and family get their pictures in the newspaper, and I think those pictures should be preserved on the web. This one, from May 1998, is of my niece Annie Van Auker when she was 12.

There's a story behind the picture: nothing ever happens in Springfield, OH, so it can be a tough job being a news photographer, particularly on a Sunday night. But Annie's church

youth group was meeting across the street from the Springfield News-Sun, so the photographer asked Annie if she could could take her picture.

The caption should read, "This is what life looks like when it's working."

A few years later, The Capitol Steps came to Springfield, and my sister

Diane Van Auker and my brother-in-law Terry Van Auker also found themselves in the newspaper. (Click to expand.)

Diane is the Public Information Officer for the Clark County Combined Health District, and knows all the media people in town.

Finally, my friend Bob Mintzer was the senior soloist of the Evanston Township High School orchestra (in his junior year), and had his picture on the cover of the Evanston Review, Jan. 18th, 1973. The caption read:

High school orchestra to present concert

Robert Mintzer and Claire Rydell are members of the Evanston High School Orchestra which will present a concert Friday. The performance will be presented at the school, 1600 Dodge Av., Evanston (Jerrold Howard photo)

And in news from 1805:

Amy Van Auker, a senior at Northwestern High School, stays in character as she serves cold water, lemonade and sarsaparilla at the Fair at New Boston.
